As one of the first "highways" used by early American settlers to reach what was once a vast, uncharted wilderness, the White River has helped shape Ozarks history. Local lore claims this area as the birthplace of the "johnboat". In 1913, the free-flowing waters of the White were dammed for the first time. The hydroelectric Powersite Dam was completed near Forsyth, creating Lake Taneycomo.
